of edible food goes to waste

People and organizations across California are working toward solutions that feed people and prevent food waste. And it’s easy to join in!

California requires food producers to collect edible food and get it to people who need it, but it requires a lot of help. The organizations below are helping feed people in our county with rescued food, clever logistics, and volunteers like you.

Get involved today by volunteering with organizations in the RecycleSmart region! RecycleSmart has had supportive relationships with these three organizations. There is also a full list of food rescue operations in our area lower on the page.

White Pony Express

White Pony Express has volunteer opportunities seven days a week. There are two ways to pitch in: through their app, picking up and delivering rescued food throughout our region; or at their distribution center.

Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano

From front desk support to barrel wrapping and food distribution, the food bank can use your help! There are up to one hundred opportunities to join in each week.

Contra Costa Fruit Rescue

We have fruit growing everywhere here in California, and the fruit rescue effort is here to make sure none of it goes to waste. Most harvest events happen in the summer and fall, but there is work available year round.
