RecycleSmart offers the following types of free workshops and services:
Home Composting for Busy People: Lecture-style workshop (virtual and in person). Covers the basics of backyard composting (hot/cold composting), Vermicomposting, mulching and grasscycling, with time for Q&A and troubleshooting.
Vermicompost & Bin Building: Learn to compost with worms! This is a hands-on workshop. You will assemble your bin, take it home with your worms and knowledge, and start composting right away! All supplies and worms included. It is very important to provide cancellation notice 48-hours prior to a worm workshop. These are living creatures and no-shows create challenges and unecessary cost.
Compost in the Classroom: The Gardens at Heather Farm in Walnut Creek offers composting classes at no cost to any school within the RecycleSmart service area. Click here for information and scheduling.
Additional Services: RecycleSmart composting instructors can table at events and Farmers Markets, come into your neighborhood (5+ homes), schools, community groups, presentations and demonstrations, upon request, at no cost. Call RecycleSmart for more information or to schedule at 925-906-1801.
Meet Our Instructors!
Marian Woodard
Marian Woodard has been at El Monte Elementary since 2016 and loves sharing science through the lens of a garden with students, teachers, and staff. She comes to the school because of a background of co-founding and co-directing Rodgers Ranch Urban Farm in Pleasant Hill, as well as being a Master Gardener, Master Composter, and a devotee of Permaculture. While her corporate career took her to 4 continents and had her training 10,000 adults, teaching children is her life’s calling.
Todd Sutton
Todd Sutton, aka the Waste Sleuth, has worked in the environmental field for more than 32 years. Todd has a broad base of experience and utilizes his technical expertise and real-world experiences to address complicated ideas and concepts in an easy to understand and persuasive manner. Todd has educated thousands on topics including sustainable materials management, water conservation, waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and composting. Todd has appeared on television as an on-air field correspondent for Discovery Channel and the History Channel as a waste prevention and recycling expert. He believes that all our actions, collectively, matter and make a difference, and lives by the motto of “when in doubt, find out”.
